Fitzroy Square Opera

presents

Verdi's 'La Traviata'

sung in English and performed by

the Garden Opera Company

Fitzroy Square Gardens, W1

Thursday 1st July 2010 at 7.30pm

With the kind permission of the Fitzroy Square Frontagers’ Committee, the Garden Opera Company return for the 4th time to Fitzroy Square in the heart of Fitzrovia to perform in the open air in this delightful setting.

‘La Traviata’ is set in Paris and is one of the most popular and accessible of Verdi's masterpieces. Inspired by Dumas's ‘The Lady of the Camellias’, this universal classic tells the moving story of Violetta's transformation from a hedonistic courtesan into a tragic heroine. A tale of hope, despair and romantic love at its most eloquent. Verdi’s masterpiece is the type of intimate drama that the Company excels in.

With many well known tunes sung by an internationally-acclaimed cast including some rising young Opera stars with a small orchestra of “formidable” (Guardian) chamber musicians - this world famous opera in this magical setting will touch you deeply.

This is a community event and we hope that everyone - residents and businesses - will help support this vibrant performance in the heart of Fitzrovia.

An opera picnic will be supplied by ‘La Fromagerie’ in Marylebone at a cost of £20.00 (£18.00 if booked in advance using the order form below) or alternatively, why not make up a group and bring a picnic to enjoy before the show or during the 40 minute interval. BOTTLE £10.00 (special price)

BY THE GLASS 175ml £3.50

White: Chateau Le Roc, Vin de Pays des Côtes du Gascogne, SW France

50% Colombard & 50% Ugni Blanc – The Vineyards of Jean-Luc and Frederic Ribes are situated just south of Toulouse, and this light, zesty wine is produced from the vines of the next property as their own land is used mostly for red wine production.  The grape varieties used give a really intense aroma of grapefruit, orange and exotic fruits whilst the taste is fresh with a lovely aromatic long flavour.

Rosé: Chateau Le Roc Rosé du Frontonnais Domaine SW France

Negrette, Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. This Rosé is made by ‘bleeding’ Negrette, Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon, after a cold pre-fermentation maceration and with up to 5 months on its lees.  Fresh, floral, full-bodied and rich, with plenty of fruit on the palate and a herbal fresh round ending.

Red: Chateau Le Roc, Cotes de Frontonnais, SW France

Negrette (60%) with blend of Syrah & Cabernet Sauvignon (20% each) Situated on a 32 acre property south of Toulouse, Jean-Luc and Frederic Ribes take full advantage of the terroir in producing vigorous tasting wines.  It pairs beautifully with cheese as well as simple style foods and more complex stews.  Lovely hits of cherry and spice make this a great modern style everyday wine.

What is the Fitzrovia Residents' Association? PDF Print E-mail

The Fitzrovia Residents' Association was founded by the residents to improve the quality of life of all those living in Fitzrovia around Fitzroy Square. It aims to:

  • increase the community spirit amongst neighbours by organising regular encounters between the different constituencies (young, old, professionals, artists etc.) who may not meet otherwise.
  • share good addresses wherever possible (plumbers, electricians etc).
  • address in a united manner issues such as noise, crime, pollution and discuss possible solutions amongst residents before approaching local authorities.
  • become one strong big voice noticed by the local authorities as opposed to a lonely individual voice.

Right now the main thing we want to do is work out what you love, hate, want to preserve and want to change in Fitzrovia. Please register via the link on the left in order to be able to complete the survey - your details will of course be kept private!

The association covers the following area (final area still to be confirmed):
